The Silent Night card for Day 8 has two cute little creatures in a winter wonderland created with multi-media.

This card is another in the series from the Hero Arts Holiday Stamp-Along. @JessicaFrost-Ballas is the mastermind behind the card concept.

Silent Night Background

To create this darling card, we’ll begin by doing the background. As a result, it will have time to dry while we’re coloring the critters. So, to begin by spraying the back side of our birch tree stencil with pixie spray. And then, after a couple of minutes, we’ll attach the stencil to a 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ piece of white cardstock. As a result, the Pixie Spray will hold the stencil on the cardstock which will keep the media from slipping under the stencil.

Next, we’ll pick up a little bit of Glitter Hero Paste from the jar with our palette knife. And, we’ll spread a thin layer over the bottom of the stencil for the shadows cast by the birch trees. Work quickly because you want to clean the paste off of everything before it dries. And then, set the cardstock aside to dry completely.

Coloring Modeling Paste

Next, we’re going to create our night scene. To do this, using White Hero Paste, we’ll put three small dabs (about a tablespoon) onto our palette or glass work surface. We do this because we’re going to create three shades of blue paste with it.

To do so, we’ll add a drop of Inker from each of the colors listed in the supplies onto the paste dabs. Mix the inker into each dab of paste with the palette knife until well blended. Afterward, make sure to clean the palette knife well after each color. Now, one at a time, pick up a bit of the paste and apply it over the stencil to create the sky behind the birch trees. Take care to blend them where the colors meet.

HINT: Don’t waste any of the leftover paste. Spread it on A2 size (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″) pieces of cardstock to use for the sentiment and/or other projects.

Carefully peel the stencil away from our background. And, we need to move quickly to clean up with this step too.

Coloring the Silent Night Critters

Now, while the background is drying we can work on the critters.

We’ll begin by stamping the images of the fox and the bunny onto a piece of white cardstock with black multi-media ink. Then, we’ll color the critters with alcohol markers. Everyone colors differently, but I’d like to share how I like to color with alcohol markers.

To demonstrate, I begin with a wash over the whole image that I am coloring with the lightest color that I am using. Then, I flick in the darkest color in the areas that I believe will have the darkest shadows. Following that, I go back to the lightest color and blend the two using tiny circular motions. This technique moves some of the dark colors out and blends them with lighter colors.

Once you have the technique down, then you can add additional medium colors in between the light and the dark, blending with the lighter tone for each. This will give you a nice graduated color.

Finishing the Silent Night Card

Once the pastes have dried we can go ahead and finish the card. To do so, we’ll start by heat embossing the sentiment onto one of the scraps that we applied the extra paste. We’ll do this by stamping the sentiment onto the scrap with watermark ink. Then we’ll sprinkle it with white embossing powder and then give it a good tap to remove any excess powder.

To assemble the card, we’ll trim down the card panel to 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and fasten it to the card base with liquid glue. Next, we’ll attach the bunny directly to the card panel with liquid glue after deciding where he and the fox will be located.

Afterwhich, we’ll pop up the fox and the sentiment using foam tape.
