How To Make A HBD Card W/ A Secret Note

Beautiful birthday card with a secret note created by water color painting with inks.

A secret note makes this card really special. Read this article for step-by-step instructions on how to make it with a supplies list.

I’ve been wanting to use this stamp set for a while and it does not disappoint. The set is Seeds of Kindness from Honey Bee Stamps. And, it has four lovely “seed packs” to choose from. We’ll use the lavender one for this card. Note: Honey Bee just came out with a sister stamp set called Spring Seeds which is also quite nice.

Coloring

To begin our card we’ll stamp the image onto a piece of white watercolor cardstock using black waterproof ink. And, while we’re at it we’ll go ahead and stamp “Birthday Wishes” as well. HINT: You may have to stamp the image multiple times because the watercolor cardstock absorbs so much of the ink. And, just to make sure the ink is dry before we begin to paint we’ll heat set it with a heat tool.

Next, we’ll dab a bit of light purple ink and a drop or two of water onto our palette or a glass work surface, or you could even use an acrylic block. And then, we’ll pick up some water with an empty watercolor brush marker and mix it in with the ink. And now, we’ll color in all of the lilac florets.

Next, we’ll add some depth to the florets by adding just a little bit of medium and dark purple. And, while we are working with the medium purple we’ll also color in the shadow or back sides of the sentiment banner.

Following that, we’ll add a wash of green around and behind the flowers. HINT: I like to concentrate the color closest to the flowers to give it some dimension. And then shade the stems with medium green, and color the frame with dark green.

Let’s set that aside to dry while we do some die-cutting.

Die-cutting And Prepping Our Card and Secret Note For Assembly

First, we’ll emboss a piece of vellum with a pretty Swiss dot design to give it a lacy feel. And then, we’ll die-cut it with a scalloped rectangle die. Next, we’ll die-cut our Seed Pack from kraft cardstock. And then, we’ll fold it on the score lines and use strong double-sided tape to fasten it together.

We’ll cut out the sentiment using the die set that coordinates with the stamps. And then, we’ll blend just a little bit of color onto the sentiment (mostly at the tips) using medium purple ink.

To create the secret note, we’ll die-cut a fancy shape from light purple cardstock. And then, we’ll stamp “May your day bloom with happiness” centered on it with dark purple ink.

And lastly, we’ll fancy cut out our focal point leaving about a 1/16″ border.

Assembly For A HBD Card With A Secret Note

We’ll begin our assembly by attaching the embossed background to a deep teal/green A2 size (4/1/4″ x 5 1/2″) card base using micro-dots. Next, we’ll fasten the focal point to the seed pack using liquid glue. And then, we’ll also use liquid glue to attach the seed back to the card front at a slight angle.

To finish of the card, we’ll pop up the sentiment directly over the lavender banner with a piece of foam sheet and we’ll put the secret note inside the seed pack.
