Need A Card Idea For A Special Friend?

Learn how to create a special card for a special friend using rainbow blending and silhouettes. Read on for step-by-step instructions.

Who doesn’t love rainbows? And the contrast between the colors of the rainbow and black and white is magnificent! The inspiration for this card is one that @GinaKrupsky from Gina K Designs showed how to make during the Crop and Create Delivered event last fall.

When I needed a card for my friend Scott I decided to make a variation of the card we made during the workshop. Here is how I did it:

Special Ink Blending

First, we need to create a mask to provide a beautiful oval focal point. We’ll do this by cutting the oval from an A2-sized scrap of cardstock with an oval die. Then we’ll attach our card panel to a sticky mat to keep it secure. And then, we’ll place the mask directly over the top of the card panel and fasten it with low-tack tape.

Using a small blending brush, we’ll pick up some of the teal ink and begin blending in a circular motion. We really want to get the cardstock saturated with the ink. And when we’re finished with the teal we’ll do the same with green ink making sure to slightly overlap the two colors. And then we’ll follow the green with yellow, orange, and red. As a result, you get these beautiful gemstone colors that blend together beautifully.

Once we get all the colors laid down then we’ll blend from the other direction. For example, using the orange blending brush we’ll blend the orange into the red. We do this because it really finishes the blend beautifully.

Stamping and Sentiments

Now that we’ve got the blending done we’ll set it aside while we work on the sentiments. We’re going to cut the word friend from black cardstock and the shadow from white cardstock. Take care not to lose the tiny titte for the “i”.

We’ll attach the word to the shadow using liquid glue. Hint: a reverse-grip tweezer is very helpful in getting the two pieces aligned just right. And to add the tittle we’ll add a tiny dot of glue where it is to go and then pick it up and set it with a jewel picker tool.

Stamping and Assembly

If you have a stamp positioning tool you can stamp both the silhouette and the sentiment at the same time. If not, then you can easily stamp them using an acrylic block. Using black amalgam ink, center the silhouette over the oval rainbow. And then place the sentiment centered below the oval.

Now, all that is left is to assemble the card. Trim the card panel to 3 1/2′ x 4 3/4″. Hint: you can do this with a stitched die if you want to include the stitched detail. Trim the color panel to 3 5/8″ x 4 7/8″.

And then we’ll center the card panel on the color panel using a glue runner. And we’ll also use the glue runner to attach the card panel to the card base, making sure it’s centered.

Finally, we’ll attach the word die and shadow over the top of the rainbow and silhouette using liquid glue.
