Well, our final card for the Twenty-five Days of Christmas Card is one with cute little penguins and a polar bear. Arent’ they carling? To make the card we’ll just do some simple coloring and then we’ll layer up the panels to give the card some dimension and interest.

Coloring the Cute Penguin Card

So, let’s get started. We’ll begin by stamping the three images onto smooth white cardstock with black multi-media ink. HINT: We’re using multi-media ink because we’ll be coloring with alcohol markers. As a result, the colors won’t blur the outlines. I am a lousy stamper because I never seem to be able to get a good image the first time. Therefore I always use a stamp positioning tool. As a result, I can stamp multiple times in the exact same place and my images always come out perfect.

Next, we’ll begin to color each of the images. Beginning with the lightest red we’ll color a wash over each image that we want to be red. And then I like to add the darkest red into the places that will be the darkest when light is shining on them. Finally, I blend out the darkest color with the medium red and finish with the lightest again.

And then, we’ll color their little beaks with a couple of tones of orangy yellow.

We’ll use some cool grays to darken the black portions of the penguins and to give some dimension. And then we’ll color the sky light blue.

Step Up Your Coloring

I recently learned that you can really step up your coloring with colored pencils. What do I mean by that? For example, once all your coloring is complete with alcohol markers you can go in with a set of contrasting colors. To demonstrate, I use three shades of purple colored pencil to add some dimension to the skies. See how it seems to glow?

And then, I use shades of purple to detail all the items that are red. HINT: Make sure to get right up next to the outlines so that there isn’t a gap between them and the color that you are putting down.

Cute Penguin Card Assembly

All that is left is to put our card together. And, because the edges of the images are kind of uneven I choose to cut each of them out by hand. Following that, I’ll die-cut three stitched squares from white cardstock, the card panel from white pearlescent cardstock, and the color panel from red.

Following that, we’ll attach the color panel to the card base with a glue Runner. And while we have it out, we’ll center the pearlescent panel on top and fasten it. And then, we’ll attach the colored images to the white stitched squares.

Finally, we’ll pop up each of the squares with double-sided adhesive foam sheets and some liquid glue.
