How To Make A Gnome Hugs Card!

To make the card we will use the Gnome Hugs die set from Spellbinders’ September release. This cute little guy is so adorable! And, the set comes with another smaller one too!

Our first step is to die-cut all of the pieces to make the gnome. We’re going to use traditional colors for a gnome. In other words, we’ll use red for his hat, green for his coat, and blue for his pants. We’ll also need white for his beard, light peach for his nose, and brown for his boots.

And then, to add some character to him, we’ll do some shading with colored pencils. You just kind of imagine where there are dips in his hat, beard, and boots and then accentuate them to create shadows.

To make the card base, all you have to do is trim a piece of heavy cardstock to 6″ x 6″. And then score it down the middle at 3″ with your bone folder.

Assembling The Gnome Hugs Card

The next step is to create the background. To do so, we’ll trim a piece of patterned paper to 2 3/4″ x 5 3/4″. Or, you can use a die to cut it out. As a result, you’ll be sure that your rectangle is square and you can even use one like this that will add a stitched rim around it as well. We’ll just go ahead and fasten the background to our card base with a tape runner.

Now, we’ll arrange all the die-cut pieces on the card front in a position that you are happy with. And then we’ll fasten them to the card front. (HINT: make sure to leave room for the sentiment down at the bottom). A good way to add some interest is to add dimension. So I recommend that you use liquid glue for his little legs, boots, and his body. And, you can also use liquid glue to attach his hat and nose to his beard. But, we’ll pop up the hat and beard with foam squares.

Add a Sentiment

OK, the last thing to do is to create the sentiment. I like to accentuate the sentiment, so I usually heat emboss my sentiments. And, that’s what we’ll do for this one. You start by brushing anti-static powder onto a piece of white cardstock. You do this to prevent the embossing powder from sticking anywhere but where you want it to be. Then, stamp your sentiment using watermark ink.

Now, we’ll sprinkle black embossing powder over the top of where we stamped. And, we’ll let it sit there for a minute before we pour the excess powder off. Now comes the magic. Heat your heat tool for forty seconds. Then, move your it back and forth over the sentiment until the powder is smooth and melted.

Use a banner die to cut out the sentiment. And, to step it up a little, you can use a red colored pencil to accentuate the stitching. And lastly, just pop it up with foam squares at the bottom of the card front. The finishing touch is to fold up his right arm so that it looks like he’s waving. So cute!
