Gift-giving season calls for thoughtful touches that make your presents truly special. Creating your own ornament gift tag combines two holiday essentials into one delightful craft—beautiful decorations that double as personalized gift markers. These charming tags can be mass-produced quickly and easily, making them perfect for anyone with a lengthy gift list or those who love to spread holiday cheer throughout their community.

The best part? Once the holidays are over, recipients can hang these tags on their Christmas tree as keepsake ornaments, giving your gift an extended life beyond the wrapping paper. Let’s dive into this simple yet impactful project that will elevate your gift-giving game.

Creating Your Base Shapes

Start by selecting your die shapes. A circular ornament shape works beautifully with the darling wreath in one of the sets we’re featuring, Holiday Wreath from Spellbinders Say Cheese Classic Mouse Christmas Collection. Any 2 1/4″ circle die will do the trick.

Cut your base shape from sturdy cardstock—aim for something substantial enough to withstand handling but not so thick that it becomes difficult to write on.

For mass production efficiency, cut multiple layers of paper at once. Most die-cutting machines can handle 2-3 layers of cardstock simultaneously, dramatically reducing your cutting time.

Die-cut Your Decorative Elements for your Ornament Gift Tag

This is what you need to make your tags just like the ones in the photos:

Mickey:

  • Base – Classic White
  • Wreath – Deep Green (sorry, I used discontinued Hero Arts Pine)
  • Hat, Tongue, & Ribbon – Red (Pomegranate)
  • Mickey’s Base with Ears & Nose – Black (Raven)
  • Face, hat fluff & ball – Classic White

Minnie:

  • Base – Classic White
  • Wreath – Deep Teal (Oceanside)
  • Hat, & Ribbon – Pink (Dahlia)
  • Tongue – Deep Pink (Wildberry)
  • Minnie’s Base with Ears & Nose – Black (Raven)
  • Face, hat fluff & ball – Classic White

Adding Decorative Elements

This step brings your tags to life with personality and charm. Attach the wreath to the circle base with liquid glue. Color the ornaments with glitter glue to add some sparkle. Let dry while you assemble the mouse and add details to the bow.

Assemble your Ornament Gift Tag

Arrange your pieces so that the bow is centered on the wreath at the bottom, and the mouse head is above it. Once you’re satisfied with their locations attach them with liquid glue.

Punch a hole near the top of each tag using either a standard hole punch or a small awl for more precision. The hole should be large enough for your chosen ribbon or twine to pass through easily, but not so large that it weakens the tag structure.

Cut twine pieces approximately 6-8 inches long—this length provides enough material to tie securely around gift packages while leaving attractive tails.

Thread the twine through the hole and tie it in a simple loop, or create a small bow at the top of the tag for extra charm. Some crafters prefer to thread the ribbon through before adding final embellishments to ensure the hanging mechanism integrates seamlessly with the overall design.

Personalizing Your Tags

Reserve space on each tag for writing the recipient’s name. Test your chosen writing implement on a scrap piece of the same paper to ensure it writes smoothly and doesn’t bleed. Fine-tip permanent markers work excellently on most cardstock surfaces.

Consider creating a small writing area by leaving a plain section on your decorated tag, or add a small label element specifically for names. Some crafters prefer to stamp “TO:” or “FOR:” before the name area for a polished, professional appearance.

Production Tips for Multiple Tags

When creating numerous tags, establish an efficient workflow. Cut all your base shapes first, then move through each decorative step for the entire batch before proceeding to the next step. This assembly-line approach significantly reduces production time and ensures consistency across your collection.

Set up a dedicated workspace where you can spread out your materials and work on multiple tags simultaneously. Consider recruiting family members or friends for a fun crafting session—many hands make light work, and the social aspect adds joy to the creative process.

Store completed tags carefully to prevent damage. A shallow box lined with tissue paper works perfectly, or string them on a ribbon to create a festive garland while keeping them organized and easily accessible.

Transform Your Holiday Giving

Creating ornament gift tags adds a personal touch that recipients will treasure long after the holidays end. These dual-purpose decorations demonstrate thoughtfulness while providing practical functionality for gift identification. The time invested in crafting these special touches pays dividends in the smiles and appreciation they generate.

Start gathering your supplies and set aside an afternoon for this delightful project. Your gift recipients will appreciate the extra effort, and you’ll feel the satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful with your own hands.
