My Love Card Tutorial

Card made with the Captivating Blooms stamp set to celebrate Altenew's 10th anniversary.

The My Love card is an elegant handmade greeting card created using layering stencils and metallic watercolors on colored cardstock to create stunning results.

I always start by making the card base for my cards first.  This one needs to be A2 size (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″).  You can find instructions on how to do so in How to Make a Card Base.

Next, we’re going to fasten an A2 size panel of Powder from Concord & 9th onto the mat of your Stampwheel.  Then arrange the image where you want it to appear on the panel and stamp it with Altenew Obsidian ink.  And, don’t forget the sentiment, you can stamp it at this stage as well.

Stenciling

The guides that Altenew includes with their layering stamps and stencils are incredibly helpful in using their products.  I recommend that you use the guide that comes with Captivating Blooms and you can’t go wrong.  The pinks we’re using for this card a just a different tone than what is on the guide and we’re using teals instead of greens.  But, it’s still easy to follow.

A couple of hints about your stenciling to take it up a level:

  • Take special care to make sure that the stencils are lined up – this is an obvious one, but taking special care ensures a high-quality finish
  • You can add shading within a stencil window to create depth and dimension.  For example, I like to make the petals darker where they fasten to the center and lighter towards the edges.  And, for leaves and stems making them darker in the center is what I usually do.

Once the stenciling is done, add a little bit of metallic watercolor paint to the centers to really draw your attention to them.

Now, all there is to do is to trim the card panel to 3 3/4″ x 5″.  And then, fasten it centered on the card base with glue tape.
