Who Doesn’t Love An Elf Card? – Day 6

I wish that I could take credit for this darling card, but I can’t. @KimKesti from @TeamSpellbinders taught how to make it during the SCT Crop and Create Delivered Cardmaking event in September.

The card that we made during the event uses a stencil and dies from Spellbinders that were exclusive for those who attended the event. However, we have some fantastic alternatives for you to use to create a similar card.

Embossing the Background

So, let’s get to it. The background of the card in the photo uses a stencil and modeling paste to create a dimensional dotted effect that looks like snow and has a lot of texture. Similarly, the Dazzling Dots embossing folder creates the exact same pattern as the stencil so you can create almost exactly the same effect.

Just spray a little water on each side of your card panel. And then, put it inside the folder and run it through your die-cutting and embossing machine.

Set the card panel aside to dry while we work on our die-cutting.

Die-cutting for the Elf Card

We’ll begin by cutting out a decorated oval that will establish our focal point. Again, the photo shows an oval cut with an exclusive die. But a great alternative is the Postage Edge oval which provides a very similar effect. Furthermore, we’ll cut the oval from Glacier cardstock.

Next, the Dancin Gnome die set has a lot of similar features as the Dancin’ Elf set. Therefore, it makes a good substitue. Additionally, he would be very cute in the same colors that we use for the elf. But, he would also be just as adorable using the colors that Spellbinders provides in their example.

Here are the colors we use:

• Black Belt – Onyx
• Brown for Bear – Timber
• Red Hat, collar, mittens, & tights – Poppy Field
• Face – Barely Peach
• Hair – Terra Cotta
• Tunic, cuffs – Fern
• Sleeves & Boots – Rainforest
• Buckle – Brushed Gold

Elf Card Assembly

To create the “dancing” effect, place a foam dot in the center of the legs die cut making sure that the legs are able to swing on the foam dot. Following that, we’ll pop up the gnome’s body with foam tape and attach it above the leges making sure not to attach it to the legs.

Attach the embossed background to an A2 (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″) card base using a glue runner or liquid glue. And next, we’ll pop up the oval with the gnome on it with foam tape, making sure that it is centered on the card front.

Finally, we’ll stamp the sentiment of our choice on white cardstock using watermark ink. Afterwards, we’ll heat emboss it with gold embossing powder. And then, we’ll trim the sentiment and pop it up with some foam tape just below the oval.
