Kids love a pop-up card! We teach how to make them in this article with videos and step-by-step instructions.
There are several techniques that we will use to make this card, so you will learn a lot more than just how to make the card. There are step-by-step instructions in this article. But, we’ve made a video so that you can follow along and make one too.
The video is quite long but please don’t let that scare you. It is edited down from three one-hour classes and we combined them into one video. We did this because we want it to be easy for you to find and so that you can start and stop the video whenever you want.
Pop-up Card Instructions
In the video, we describe how to do each step and how to use tools like the paper trimmer, the die cutting machine, etc. So be sure to watch the video for those detailed explanations and descriptions. In this section, we give you step-by-step instructions for reference when making your card.
Creating The Pop-up Feature
- Cut a piece of cardstock 11″ x 6″ and fold it in half to make a card that is 5 1/2″ x 6″.
- Open the card we just made and place the die of the bear on the fold line. For example, center the little “v”s on either side of the banner on the fold line. And then hold it in place with a piece or two of low-tack tape. Then die-cut the bear. Here is a link to an article on what a die is and how to die-cut: Do Your Kids Want To Learn How To Die-cut?
- Using the folding diagram below as a guide, carefully fold at the score lines. As a result, folding up towards you will create a “valley” (the blue lines), and folding away from you will create a “mountain” (red lines).
Making The Bear
- Cut a piece of cardstock 6″ x 6″. Center the die of the bear onto the cardstock and run it through the die-cut machine. And then, cut the bear from the paper at the bottoms of the feet and at the top of the head.
- Stamp the bear’s face, paws, and feet onto the bear that we just cut out.
- Color what we just stamped using the brown tri-color marker. We do this by coloring the face, paws, and feet with the lightest color. Now outline each with the darkest brown and then add the middle brown next to the dark outline on the face blending the two together. And then using the lightest brown again blend the colors.
- Add accents in the ears, on the cheeks, and on the bottoms of the feed using the pink marker.
- Stamp the “surprise” sentiment from the stamp set onto the banner that the bear is holding.
- Using a glue runner, add adhesive to the back of the colored bear and then attach it to the first bear that we cut out.
Putting the Pop-up Card Together
- Cut a piece of cardstock 11″ x 6″ and fold it to make a card that is 5 1/2″ x 6″. This will be the outside of the card.
- Add adhesive to the back of the piece that has the bear but NOT on the bear.
- Fold the bear piece and fold the outside card leaving them each slightly open. Carefully slip the bear piece into the outside card and fasten them together.
Colored Cardstock, Patterned Paper, and Accent Pieces
Colored Cardstock
- Cover your work surface with a piece of paper.
- Select the ink color that you want to make your colored cardstock with.
- Using cardstock scraps, apply ink directly to the cardstock using long swipes from edge to edge. As a result, we create “colored” cardstock.
- When the ink is dry cut out two pieces: 3 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ and 3 3/4″ x 2 1/4″.
Patterned Paper
- Select a stamp or two from the Craft Box Kit.
- Stamp the images in any design you want onto a piece of cardstock.
- Color in the images with markers if you like.
- ut them out with the coordinating dies. Cut out two pieces: 4 1/4″ x 3 3/4″ and 4 1/4″ x 2 3/4″.
Accent Pieces
- Cut a piece of cardstock 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.
- Stamp both balloons, and then the star and the heart several times (at least three).
- When the ink is dry, color the balloons red and blue, the hearts pink, and the stars yellow.
- Cut them out using the coordinating dies.
Finishing the Pop-up Card
- Using a glue runner add adhesive around the edges of the back of the largest piece of patterned paper and then center it on the largest colored cardstock. And then repeat with the smaller pieces.
- Attach the large cardstock and patterned paper to the front of the card using the glue runner. Then repeat with the smaller set on the inside of the card under the bear pop-up.
- Stamp the good luck sentiment onto a piece of white cardstock. Furthermore, trim any extra cardstock away from the sentiment.
- Make a cut towards the sentiment from the center of each end. And then cut from each corner to where the cuts end in the middle. This results in a banner cut.
- Attach the sentiment to the front with a glue runner. And then add the balloons, stars, and hearts to make a pretty design
Congratulations! You have finished your pop-up card
