How To Use A Stitching Die Many Ways!

Four colorful cards with stitching on a wooden floor.

Today, we’re going to go over several things we can do with a new die, Layered Stitched Diamonds from the newest @Spellbinders release. It’s a limited edition, so get it quick while they last. And, there is a coordinating sentiment stamp set that you can get to go with it.

The release is called Holiday Stitching Web Exclusives.

Ombre Stitching Card To Celebrate Fall

An orange card with geometric string art patterns and a diamond-shaped central design that reads "Happy Fall," accented by early hints of floral elements.

Ombre Stitching Card Background

The background for this card uses three colors of ink to achieve a velvety blend of orange top to bottom across the card panel. And we blend them on extremely smooth white cardstock. An added benefit to using this cardstock is that it is 110lb which will help to keep it from getting bent while stitching. Hint: I use the outside frame die to mark the four corners on the cardstock to ensure the blending completely covers what will be cut out.

When the ink is dry, we’ll align the cover die from Layered Stitched Diamonds centered within the four pencil marks. And then, we’ll run it through my die-cut machine.

Next, I’ll do the stitching using four colors of tan/brown embroidery floss to continue with the ombre effect. Starting with the lightest color in the top two corners, then the medium-light in the next two, and so on.

Finishing and Assembly

Once all of the stitching is complete we can use the same die that we used to mark the cover panel to cut around the stitching. Then we can attach it, with the back facing, to a piece of brown cardstock trimmed to 4″ x 5 1/4″ with a glue runner. We do this because we don’t want the white of the card base to show through the little stitching holes. And then we’ll also use the glue runner to attach it to the card base.

To finish off the card we’ll stamp the sentiment onto a scrap of white cardstock with brown ink and then we’ll cut it out with the center diamond die from the set. Now we’ll stamp the flower above and below the sentiment with the same brown ink. And then we’ll color the flowers with an orange alcohol marker. Lightly blend around the edges of the diamond with the same brown ink and then attach to the center with the glue runner.

Rainbow Stitching Birthday Card

A colorful handmade birthday card with a rainbow gradient background and black geometric patterns surrounding the centrally placed text "Happy Birthday." There are many ways to decorate further, such as incorporating stitching die techniques for added texture.

The techniques for making this card are very similar to the ones we use for the first card. Therefore, we will just define what is different.

The background for this card is created with the new Tim Holtz watercolor pencils which create a beautiful pastel rainbow. We do this by scribbling the pencils across the cardstock in a rainbow. And then we’ll use a watercolor brush marker filled with water to activate the pigment and blend where the colors meet. Hint: It’s helpful to clean your brush marker on a piece of paper towel in between colors.

And, we’ll stamp the sentiment and floral design directly on the card panel for this card.

Elegant Thank you Card

A handmade card with a navy blue and gold design featuring the words "Thank you" in gold script at the center, set against a light wooden background. Many ways to enhance it include using a stitching die for added texture.

We switch things up a bit with this card. Instead of stitching it, we do some masking and blending with pigment ink. And we let the white from the card base coming through the stitching hole become part of the pattern.

To create the card we cut out the card panel with both the cover and the frame die. One at a time, using low tack tape we’ll mask off each of the triangles that we want to color. And then we’ll blend the gold onto the triangle that has been masked off with a very light hand. Then we’ll move on to the next one until they are all complete.

Now we set the card panel aside until the ink is dry. Hint: you may need to use your heat gun to ensure that the pigment ink is good and dry before you go on to the next step.

Cut the center diamond from the card panel using the die that comes from the set. Using the same die, cut a diamond from white cardstock. Attach the card panel to the card base. And then, without glue, inset the white diamond in the cavity in the center of the card.

Stamp the sentiment onto the center of the card with watermark ink. Next, we will heat-emboss it with gold embossing powder. Once the sentiment is cool, remove the white piece. And then, pop it up with some foam tape.

All that is left is to add the embellishments and the card is complete.

Partial Rainbow Stitching Birthday Card

A handmade birthday card featuring geometric patterns and thread art decorations in yellow and orange, showcasing the message "Hope You Have a Great Birthday" in the center. The intricate designs highlight many ways to utilize stitching dies for added elegance.

Our final card uses a combination of the techniques that we use in the previous three. And we introduce a new one as well.

The stitching for this card takes a little more concentration. That is because we’re using different colors for each stitch. So you glue down the first end with liquid glue. Then you run the needle up through the cardstock and down through the hole at the other end of the stitch. Glue and cut the floss and then switch colors.

We use the four triangle shape dies to create the large diamond in the center of the panel. Next, we stamp the sentiment directly onto the card panel. And then we pop up the stitching panel over patterned paper to create a unique background. And it helps to move your eye to the focus point as well.
