How to Make 2 Fun Interactive Die Cut Birthday Cards
Both cards are basically the same, the only differences are the color schemes and how the elements are arranged on the cards and envelopes. Follow along with our step-by-step instructions to create your own versions.
These projects create a beautiful pocket envelope with a card when pulled up opens to reveal a floral sentiment surprise inside. It’s an engaging design that adds an extra layer of discovery for the recipient.
Instructions:
- Determine Your Color Scheme: The the Essential Envelope Every Day Add-Ons Die Set comes with a die for a panel that fits just inside the sleek lines of the envelope that is perfect for using patterned paper. Select a pattern that suits your project and let it dictate your color scheme. I’m using two patterns from Scrapbook.com’s Woodland patterned paper pack for my cards.
- Die Cut the Envelope: Using the Essential Envelope Die Set, cut the main envelope piece from a coordinating color cardstock, mine is acorn. Assemble the envelope by folding along the score lines and securing the side flaps with strong adhesive. Now, die cut the envelope panel from the patterned paper that you selected in the first step.
- Die Cut the Card Insert and all of the Design Elements: Now for the fun part! Use the Essential Envelope Every Day Add-Ons Die Set to cut the card insert and several flowers and leaves from various colored cardstocks. We recommend cutting these for the set with the double flowers:
- One large flower and the card insert in light coral (Bellini).
- One medium flower in gold (Tuscan).
- Three small flowers in different shades light coral (Bellini, and light teal (Waterfall).
- Six flower centers in complementary colors: pale coral, light teal, dark teal, rust (Chiffon, Waterfall, Oceanside, Cinnamon).
- A few leaf stems and the envelope decoration in shades of teal (Waterfall and Oceanside).
- We recommend cutting these for the set with the single flower
- Assemble the Flowers: You can do a little ink blending around the edges and in the flower centers if you want to add some dimension or differentiate colors. Then, layer the flower pieces to create dimensional blooms. You can gently curl the petals with your fingers or a shaping tool for a more realistic look if you want. Add the small stamen die cuts to the centers.
- Arrange and Attach: Arrange your floral cluster on the front of the envelope, making sure to leave space for the patterned paper panel to show through.
- Add a Sentiment – Create the Floral Card Insert: There is a sentiment stamp and die set, Tabbed In & Out Sentiments, in this collection that is just right for tucking a sentiment inside on the card insert. However, I don’t have it so I use a couple things from my stash which work beautifully. The “happy birthday” die from the Essential Envelope Die Set is perfect for this. And then, I use a heat embossed in teal “CHEERS” on the pull tab and a lovely inside sentiment. You want to decide on how you want the insert to be arranged before you do your heat embossing. Then add your die cut sentiment and flowers. When the recipient pulls the tab, the pretty flower along with the hidden birthday message is revealed!
- Get Fancy: You can add a clever flower that looks like it’s on the front of the envelope. Yet it’s attached to the card insert with super-thick foam squares (I used three layers)
