I am happy to tell you that I have progressed on to Level Two of the Altenew Educator Certification Program. The first course in Level Two is called Beyond Basic Backgrounds and oh boy did I learn some fun techniques! I’m going to share one of them with you today.

What is super cool about this technique is that you can make your own DIY Patterned paper in any color and in with any stamp that you have in your stash.

Creating the DIY Patterned Paper

To make the patterned paper we’ll start with a piece of A2 size white cardstock and we’re going to use a simple circle stamp to create our pattern. Hint: I always use a lighter weight (80lb) cardstock for my card panels.

Next, we want to make a light mark with a pencil 4 1/4″ from the top on both sides. Then we’re going to lightly draw a line from the opposite top corner to the marks that we just made. So our lines will be from the top left corner to the 4 1/4″ mark on the right side. And one from the top right corner to the 4 1/2″ mark on the left side.

We’ll use four coordinating colors from our stash to create an ombre effect. Using the second darkest color we’re going to stamp a circle centered over where the two lines cross. From this first circle, we’re going to establish a grid to use.

Then we measure the distance from where the lines cross to the edge of the circle and multiply that distance by three. We then use this distance to mark parallel lines in both directions from the first lines that we drew. When finished we have a grid that we can use to as a guide to stamp the rest of our pattern.

Using the circle stamp we then stamp at each cross mark beginning with the darkest color at the top and ending with the lightest at the bottom. We set that aside to dry while we work on the sentiment.

We use a big happy die to cut the sentiment from glitter foam and then a shadow from black cardstock. Then we cut a large circle from vellum using a circle die.
