Yep, this card glows in the dark! Read all the way to the end to learn the supplies you’ll need and step-by-step how to make it.
This card is so fun to make! And, it’s even more fun to play with when it’s done.
Create A Panel That Glows In The Dark
You’ll want to begin by smoothing paste that glows in the dark onto an A2 (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″) piece of white cardstock. To demonstrate this, the best way to do so is to pick up some of the paste with a palette knife and put it at the top of your cardstock. And then, use a scraper to smooth it out over the whole panel.
It’s a good idea to do this on top of a piece of scrap paper or copy paper.
Die-cutting
While the paste is drying, you can work on the die-cutting. But first, let’s create a jig to use to evenly place all of the skeletons. This is what mine looks like:
To make it make a mark halfway (2 3/4″) from the top and the bottom on both long sides of an A2 piece of heavy cardstock. And then, draw a line between them. Repeat at 1/4″, 1 1/2″, 4′, and 5 1/4″, you should have five lines. Next, make a mark halfway (2 1/8″) across the top and another at the bottom. And then, draw a line between them. Repeat at 1/2″, 1 5/16″, 2 7/8″, and 3 5/8″, you should have five vertical lines.
Now, use your skull die from Spellbinders September Large Die of the Month, Boo-Licous Fall Cupcake, to cut at each of the interections of the lines. For my card, I lined up the eyes to center over the lines. Your jig is now complete.
At this point, you need to tape the jig to an A2-size piece of black cardstock. Then, place the skull die inside one of the “skull holes” and run it through your die-cutting machine. Repeat until you have all but the first solid skull in the bottom right corner cut out.
While we have our die-cutting machine out let’s go ahead and cut out the letters to spell boo! three times from the same black cardstock.
Assembling The Card That Glows In The Dark
Next, we’ll remove the jig from the black cardstock and tape it to the panel that we smoothed the paste on. Then, we’ll attach each of the skulls to the pasted panel using liquid glue using the jig as a guide for the right locations.
And then, we’ll layer the letters and exclamation points with liquid glue and fasten them onto the panel as well. At this point, we’ll attach the panel to an A2-size card base using liquid glue.
All that is left is to create the frames. To make them, we’ll start by adding double-sided adhesive to the backs of orange, green, and purple A2-size card panels. Next, working on a safe surface for cutting on we’ll hand cut the frames.
To demonstrate how we’ll begin with the purple panel. Starting in one corner about 1/4″ from the edge we’ll begin cutting a wobbly line to the next corner. It helps if you do this slowly. Then, keeping the knife blade in place, turn the card panel and keep cutting. And, then you keep doing the same thing until you have all four sides cut, taking care to finish your cut line at the same place that you started.
Next, we’ll fasten the purple frame to the green panel by removing the remaining backing paper and aligning the edges of both. Then, we’ll cut the green panel just like the purple, but this time we’ll be cutting the green 1/4″ from the purple edge and we’ll try to wobble in different directions than we did for the purple. And then, we’ll repeat again with the orange panel.
Finally, we’ll attach the frame to the card front. And we’re done.
