Make Yourself a Martini

Classic Martini Recipe

Makes1 cocktail

Serves 1

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 ounces
    gin or vodka
  • 1/2 ounce
    dry vermouth
  • Ice
  • Lemon peel twist or olives, for garnish
Instructions
  1. Before you build your martini, put your martini glass in the freezer to chill.
  2. Place 2 1/2 ounces gin or vodka and 1/2 ounce dry vermouth in a cocktail shaker.
  3. Add cubed ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  4. If you prefer ice shards floating at the top of your martini, then simply strain the drink into your chilled martini glass. If you don’t want the ice shards, then strain the drink through a fine-mesh strainer to catch the ice shards.
  5. Pare a lemon peel, and express (pinch) the back of the lemon peel over the martini. Garnish with speared olives.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Card Base: Begin by creating a standard A2-sized card base from white Cardstock. An A2 card typically measures 4.25 x 5.5 inches when folded. For help making a card base read How To Make a Card Base/ Set this aside for now.
  2. Create Your Background Panel: Now for the fun part! What’s the last thing you put in your martini? Olives! Use your favorite circle stencil with white cardstock and green ink to create an A2 size background covered with olives.
  3. Create A Background For Your Focal Image The Girl in the Martini Glass: The perfect background for our focal image is a fluid, swirly, watercolory type look. Whenever I have ink left over on my work surface I spray it with water and place a piece of watercolor cardstock on top. This technique usually creates beautifully backgrounds that you can use when they are dry. If you do this too, find one from your stash to use. Otherwise go ahead and make one: Smoosh ink onto your work surface. I use Picked Raspberries, Ripe Persimmons, and Mustard Seed for mine, they will really bring the martini glass to life. But you can choose any color combination you like. Spray it with water and lay your cardstock or watercolor cardstock over the top and press it into the ink. Carefully lift the cardstock and set it aside to dry.
  4. Press the Martini Glass Image: Once your panel is dry place it on your BetterPress platform. Ink up the martini glass press plate from the Martini Mood set with Black BetterPress Ink. Run it through your die-cutting machine to transfer the crisp, letterpress image onto the cardstock. The BetterPress system gives you a beautifully debossed image. Take your time with this step and make sure that the image is completely covered with ink before running it through. Go ahead and use the sentiments press plate from the same set with black ink on Porcelain cardstock while you have your BetterPress equipment out
  5. Die-Cut the Elements: Once your pressing is complete, use a scalloped rectangle to die-cut the pressed panel. Next, use the sentiment die from the Martini Mood set to cut out all of the sentiments, we’ll use “What was I saying?” for our card.
  6. Assemble the Card: It’s time to put everything together. Adhere the “olive” background panel to your white card base using a tape runner. Next, attach the martini glass panel kind of wonky on the center of the card front using foam squares or foam strips. This will give it dimension and make it the star of the show.
  7. Add the Sentiment: Carefully apply liquid glue to the back of the sentiment and position it on the card. You can place it slightly overlapping the stem of the martini glass or just below it, depending on what looks best to you.
  8. Finishing Touches: For a little extra sparkle, you can add a few embellishments or sequins around the martini glass. Or, use a tiny green gem for the olive in the girl’s martini. This final step ties the whole design together and adds a professional finish.

And there you have it—a sophisticated and cheerful Martini Mood card, ready to be sent to someone special!

Step-by-Step Instructions

A painting of a glass of water with ice and a straw is shown next to five color swatches labeled Mulberry, Orchid, Coral, Fancy Tale, and Celestial.
  1. Select a Color Scheme: Use the brides colors for your card if you know what they are. I like to use the DIY Color Deck to find pretty, unique color combinations. The above photo shows the card and cardstocks that I use for my pretty engagement card. The beauty of using the Color Deck is that your creativity is involved in picking just the right card and then you get to choose which colors in that card you want to use.
  2. Prepare the Card Base: Create a standard A2-sized card base from a sturdy piece of white cardstock. This will provide a clean canvas for our elegant design.
  3. Create the Champagne Flutes: Using the A Special Toast Etched Dies, cut the champagne flute from heavy vellum cardstock. These dies are wonderfully detailed and the vellum cardstock will make the glass look transparent yet incredibly luxurious. You will also need to cut the “bubbly” inserts for the flutes. You can use a light pink or champagne-colored cardstock for this to mimic the look of rosé or champagne. I use a color that contrasts with those that I will use for the floral and bow elements. Adhere the bubbly inserts behind the vellum flute outlines with liquid glue.
  4. Create the Background Layer: Cut a panel of Windy Cardstock to 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″. To add a touch of subtle elegance, you can die-cut this panel instead, with a delicate pattern, like the embroidered look you get from the Linear Touch Rectangle & Tag Dies set. This adds texture without overwhelming the main focal point.
  5. Die-Cut the Engagement Ring, Bow, & Floral Elements: Use the coordinating dies from the A Special Toast Etched Die set to cut out the engagement ring. A sparkly silver holographic cardstock is perfect for the diamond and looks beautiful on the ring die-cut from gold mirror cardstock. Next, die-cut the floral elements from a variety of coordinating cardstock colors. Finally, die-cut the bow from the cardstock that you die=cut the champagne from.
  6. Press the Sentiment: To draw your eye to the sentiment we’ll add another touch of gold by hot foiling the sentiment. Select a set with a lovely font like the one I use from the Always You Timeless Sentiements set. But, you could also use the A Special Toast Sentiments press plate to ink up the “On Your Engagement” sentiment with Black BetterPress Ink. Trim the sentiment to a small rectangle.
  7. Assemble the Main Elements: Center and adhere the embossed Windy panel onto your card base with foam strips or squares. Next, set the ring inside the glass and attach it behind the champagne using liquid glue. Now, carefully adhere the vellum glass centered on the smaller panel, just barely touching the design on the bottome (about 1/4″ from the bottome edge). Since adhesive can sometimes show through vellum, try to place your adhesive in areas that will be covered by other elements, like where the champagne flutes will go.
  8. Arrange the Floral Bouquet and Sentiment: Put together the bow. Arrange the the floral elements around it to make it look like the bow is tying a bouquet to the stem of the glass. Once you’re satisfied with the floral arrangement you can adhere them with liquid glue. Now, use foam squares to attach the bouquet below the glass at the top of the stem. To complete the card, tuck the sentiment in behind the flowers and bow and fasten it down. These final elements add a soft, dreamy quality to the card and is perfect for a romantic occasion like an engagement.

Your stunning “A Special Toast” engagement card is now complete and ready to send your best wishes to the happy couple!

Make Yourself a Margarita

Cadillac Margarita Recipe

Prep time 5 minutes

Serves1

Ingredients
  • teaspoons kosher salt or Tajín Clásico seasoning
  • 1 medium lime
  • Ice

  • ounces premium reposado tequila (I like Patron Anejo)

  • 2 ounce Grand Marnier
  • 1/2 ounce agave nectar
  • Margarita Mix (I like Jose Cuervo)

Instructions
  1. Spread 2 teaspoons kosher salt in an even layer on a small flat plate. Halve 1 medium lime. Cut 1 thin round from one half. Run the lime wheel over the rim of an old-fashioned or margarita glass to moisten (reserve the wheel for garnish). Invert the glass into the salt, turning it as needed, to coat the rim. Fill the glass with ice.

  2. Juice the lime halves until you have 1 ounce. Place the lime juice, 2 ounces  tequila, 1 ounce Grand Marnier, and 1/2 ounce agave nectar, and margarita mix in a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker halfway with ice, seal, and shake until the outside of the shaker is very frosty, about 20 seconds.

  3. Pour through a strainer into the glass. Garnish with the reserved lime wheel.

Recipe from The Kitchn. (although I added some things).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Create the Card Base: Start with a standard white A2-sized card base.
  2. Die-Cut the Margarita Glass: Use the Sip Sip Olé’ Etched Dies to cut out the margarita glasses. You can make one or two for your card front. Cut the main glass shape from a fun color like lime green. Or, you can get fancy and cut it from vellum, add glossy accents to make it look like glass. When the gloss has set, die-cut another glass from white. Then, cut the salt rim from white Cardstock. Die-cut the margarita and blend it the chartreuse and geen making it darker at the bottom. The set also includes dies for a lime wedge and a cactus swizzle stick—cut these from appropriate colors (green for the lime and the cactus, a tan for the stick).
  3. Assemble the Glass: Glue the vellum glass to the white glass with liquid glue. Then add the salt rim onto the top of the margarita glass. For a fun “salted rim” effect, apply a thin line of liquid glue to the rim and sprinkle it with clear or white glitter. Tap off the excess and let it dry. Attach the lime wedge to the rim of the glass. Your festive drink is now ready!
  4. Create a Dynamic Background: To make this card extra lively, create a background with a pop of color. Blend deep blue and green ink around the edges of an A2 piece of Porcelain Cotton Cardstock to create a spotlight for the drink. This will set the tone for our birthday fiesta.
  5. Stamp or Press the Sentiment: On your blended background, press the “Sip Sip Olé It’s Your Birthday” sentiment from the Sip Sip Olé Sentiments set using Leaf BetterPress Ink. Or, if you don’t have that set, use a stamp from your stash that is perfect for this card’s theme.
  6. Assemble Your Card: Adhere your background panel to the card base using a tape runner. Arrange your die-cut margarita glass at an angle on the card front. Glue the swizzle stick and lime together, and place them where you want them, and then fasten them to the card front using liquid glue.

Your “Sip Sip Olé” birthday card is now ready to get the party started! This fun, handcrafted card is a wonderful way to send birthday wishes.
