The “Let It Snow” Card

This card design captures a complete winter narrative. The centerpiece is the wonderfully detailed alpine ski lodge, complete with a snow-dusted roof and charming details like twinkle lights. The scene is set against a soft, blended background that evokes a gentle nightime snowfall, and the “Let It Snow” sentiment adds the perfect finishing touch. It’s a project that combines die-cutting and ink blending to create a card with incredible depth and texture.

How to Make the “Let It Snow” Card

Let’s gather our supplies and get started on this creative journey. Follow these instructions to assemble your very own ski lodge card.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Card Base: Start by creating an A2-sized (4.25 x 5.5 inches) card base from white cardstock. Read How To Make A Card Base for tips on how to do this.
  2. Create the Background Panel: Cut a panel of white cardstock to A2 size. Using a blending brush, softly apply ink around the edges, leaving the center lighter. You’ll want to start with your lightest color; in this case, we’re using Prize Ribbon. Next, use Chipped Sapphire, and then apply Black Soot around the outside edges. This creates a beautiful vignette effect that looks like a winter night sky.
  3. Foil the Sentiment: Use the Glimmer System and gold foil to imprint the “Let It Snow” sentiment onto a piece of Cosmic Sky cardstock. Once foiled, use the coordinating die to cut it out.
  4. Die-Cut the Lodge Pieces: Now for the fun part! Using your Platinum™ machine, die-cut all the pieces for the ski lodge.
    • Lodge Walls: First, rub espresso ink directly over an A2-size piece of fawn cardstock. This creates the look of wood grain. Now, cut the lodge and the piece below the stairs from your inked cardstock. Use a detail brush and espresso ink to enhance the seams between the logs and add some dimension.
    • Lodge Structure and Landscape: Use Fern cardstock for the eave, the front door, and three trees. Use Alabaster o create the base for the lodge and the chimney.
    • Wood Details: Cut the window frames, door frame, and other accents from Alabaster cardstock.
    • Windows: Use Saffron cardstock to create a warm glow through the windows and then use your brown detail brush around the edges to add some shadows.
    • Light Strings: Just use white cardstock for the two light strings and then color the lights and strings with alchohol markers
    • Snow: Use Brushed White cardstock to cut the snow for the roof.
  5. Assemble the Ski Lodge: Begin putting your ski lodge together. Use liquid adhesive to carefully layer the pieces. The brick details and snow-lined roof will add wonderful texture and a realistic winter feel. Pro Tip: Blend a little light brown ink over the chimney and the lodge base to add more dimension to the brick and make it look more realistic.
  6. Add Finishing Touches: Position and glue your fully assembled ski lodge onto the panel. At the same time be sure to attach the trees in front of and behind the lodge where they look good. For a touch of festive sparkle, spray the card front with shimmery sparkles and splatter white to create the snow. Then, adhere the “Let It Snow” sentiment to the top of your background panel with foam squares.
  7. Complete the Card: Attach the finished decorative panel to your card base. Your cozy ski lodge scene is now complete and ready to send!
