Are you ready to journey down the yellow brick road? If you love The Wizard of Oz as much as I do, you’re going to adore the new Wonder of Oz Collection from Spellbinders and Graphic 45. This collection is filled with whimsical characters, iconic imagery, and beautiful sentiments that bring the magic of the movie right to your craft table.

Today, we’re going to create four enchanting cards, each inspired by a different part of this wonderful story. I’ll walk you through how to make each one, step-by-step. So, grab your supplies, click your heels together three times, and let’s get crafting!

The Confidence Wonder of Oz Card

A handmade card with a lion drawing, red border, gold background, and the text "All you need is confidence. This card was created using products from Spellbinders Wonder of Oz Collection.

Our first card is for anyone who needs a little reminder of their own inner strength, just like the Cowardly Lion. We’ll use the Tin Man, Scarecrow & Lion BetterPress Plate & Die Set to create a card that’s full of heart… and courage!

How to Make the Confidence Wonder of Oz Card

  1. Prepare the Card Base: Start with an A2-sized (4.25″ x 5.5″) card base made from any color cardstock. Because red is associated with courage, power, and energetic confidence, we’ll use an A2-size red color panel to create a frame for our card. You can attach it to your card base with a tape runner. For help making card bases, read How To Make a Card Base
  2. Press the Image: Using your BetterPress system, ink the Lion plate from the set with black BetterPress ink and press it onto a piece of porcelain cardstock. The detail you get from these plates is just incredible!
  3. Add Color: The only color we’re adding to the image is a little bit of red on both of the Lion’s bows. I like to use water-reactive colored pencils for tiny little spaces like these bows.
  4. Create the Background: Take a quarter piece of brown cardstock and spray it heavily with Spring Green + Gold. When the panel is dry, trim it to 3.75″ x 5.00″ and adhere it to your card base with double-sided adhesive like White Liner.
  5. Assemble the Card: Die-cut your colored Lion image using the coordinating die. Then, press the “All you need is confidence” sentiment from the Wonder of Oz Sentiments BetterPress Plate & Die Set onto a small strip of porcelain cardstock. Arrange the Lion and the sentiment on your card front, using foam tape to pop them up for extra dimension.

The Wicked Wonder of Oz Card

A handmade card with a purple border, orange floral background, a witch illustration, and the text "A wicked friend like you is rare. This card was created using products from Spellbinders Wonder of Oz Collection.

Every story needs a villain, and the Wicked Witch of the West is one of the most memorable! This card has a fun, spooky vibe and is perfect for Halloween or for a friend with a wicked sense of humor. We’ll be using the Dorothy & the Witches BetterPress Plate & Die Set.

How to Make the Wicked Card

  1. Prepare the Card Base: Use a white A2-sized card base and then attach an A2 purple card panel with a tape runner. Trim a piece of brushed gold cardstock to 3.75 x 5.00 inches (or use a rectangle die) and attach it centered on the card front for a dramatic effect.
  2. Press and Color the Witch: Ink the Wicked Witch plate with black ink and press it onto a piece of porcelain cardstock. Use water-reactive colored pencils to color the witch’s face and hands green and her hat and clothes purple.
  3. Create a Spooky Magical Scene: Take the Wonder of Oz Field of Poppies 3D Embossing Folder and rub purple ink on the inside of the top cover. Then place a half sheet of orange cardstock and run it through your die-cutting and embossing machine. Spritz the panel with Yellow and Copper Two Tone Spray. When the embossed panel is dry, trim it to 3.5″ x 4.75″. To create a magical poppy-filled field.
  4. Assemble the Card: Adhere the poppy field panel to your card front using double-sided adhesive. Die-cut the witch and the “A Wicked Friend Like You is Rare” sentiment. I love how playful this sentiment is! Position them on the card, and maybe add a few sparkly green embellishments to represent her magical powers.

The No Place Like Home Card

A decorative sign with ornate patterns reads, "There is no place like home," set against a textured beige background. This card was created using products from Spellbinders Wonder of Oz Collection.

How to Make the No Place Like Home Card

  1. Press the Card Front: We’re using the Wonder of Oz Frame and Tag BetterPress Plate & Die Sets for our card front. But before we press it, we need to do some coloring. The goal is to create a magical blend of colors that will peek through the black pressed ink. To do so, randomly blend red, yellow, and orange shimmery ink over an A2-sized piece of porcelain cardstock. Add a little more shine by spraying the panel with Yellow + Copper two-tone spray. When the spray is dry, ink the Frame and Tag plate with black ink and press it onto our magical panel.
  2. Prepare the Card Base: Create another A2-sized card base using white cardstock. Fasten the magical pressed panel to the card front using strong adhesive such as double-sided adhesive. Now open up the card base and use the coordinating die to die-cut through both layers of the card front. Hand-cut a little white triangle that will fit across the pointy part at the top of the tag. Trace the pointy part at the top onto another scrap of white cardstock and cut out the triangle. Attach the larger triangle behind the pointy part on the inside of the card front. Now attach the smaller triangle to the part of the larger triangle that you can see from the front of the card. This will create the hinge for the door. Use a hole punch to cut a small hole through both thicknesses of the hinge. Cut a hole in the same spot on the pointy part of the die-cut tag (door) and fasten it to the card front with a brad. The door should swing freely.
  3. Press and Color Dorothy: Ink the Dorothy plate with black ink and press it onto porcelain cardstock. Color her dress with water-resistant colored pencils. Use a light blue, add a touch of red to her ruby slippers, and give Toto a hint of brown. The fine lines of the BetterPress plate make coloring a dream. Use the coordinating die to cut out Dorothy.
  4. Assemble the Card: Use a hole punch to cut a small hole through both thicknesses of the hinge. Cut a hole in the same spot on the pointy part of the die-cut tag (door) and fasten it to the card front with a brad. The door should swing freely. On the inside of the card, arrange Dorothy so that she shows beautifully through the opening when the door is open. Fasten her down with liquid glue. And if you want to, add a few red gems around the sentiment to mimic the sparkle of the ruby slippers.

The Emerald City Card

A colorful illustration shows four silhouetted figures and a dog walking toward a green city on the horizon under a purple and yellow sky. This card was created using products from Spellbinders Wonder of Oz Collection.

Our final card is an ode to the dazzling Emerald City. This design uses the beautiful Wonder of Oz Silhouette Etched Dies to create a magical scene that looks straight out of the movie.

How to Make the Emerald City Card

  1. Prepare the Card Base: Start with a standard A2-sized white card base.
  2. Create the Background: On a 4.25″ x 5.5″ panel of white cardstock, use shimmery sprays to create a vibrant, glowing background that mimics the light from the Emerald City. This is where you let your creative self take over. Watercolor your scene using the spray with a watercolor brush. Then splatter the panel to add texture and lots more shimmer. Set aside to dry.
  3. Die-Cut the Silhouette: Using the Wonder of Oz Silhouette Etched Dies, cut the main silhouette from black cardstock. This die includes Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion walking toward the Emerald City. The level of detail is fantastic!
  4. Assemble the Card: Once your ink-blended background is dry, adhere it to the card base. Then, carefully glue the black silhouette die-cut over the top. The contrast between the dark silhouette and the bright background is stunning. To finish, trim the silhouette along the edges of the card base with scissors. To me, this is one of those cards that doesn’t need a sentiment. But, you could add the “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” sentiment from the Wonder of Oz Sentiments set, pressed in black ink on the front or inside if you want to.
