How to Make The Candy Christmas Gingerbread Train Card

Step 1: Create your card base using classic white cardstock trimmed to 4 1/4″ x 8 1/2″. We’ll create a Christmassy background by embossing the panel with the Peppermint Stripes Embossing folder. And then, rub your candied apple Distress ink lightly across the embossing. This warm background will complement the rich colors of your train beautifully. Now, score the panel at 4 5/8″, flip it and score 2 1/8″ from the other end. Fold your panel along the score lines. You should end up with a Z fold with a card front of 4 1/4″ x 4 5/8″.

Step 2: Cut the main locomotive piece from rich brown cardstock, then cut all the decorative elements and car pieces in your chosen colors. The variety in this set allows for wonderful customization.

Step 3: Add frosting details by cutting the overlay pieces from red and white cardstock. These intricate details are what make the gingerbread theme so convincing and charming.

Step 4: Create your track foundation using the Sweet Borders dies cut from white or brushed white and white glitter cardstock, giving your train a snowy platform to travel on. You will need to do this twice. After assembling the frosting to the snow border trim one of the pieces to 4 5/8″ long. If you’re fussy like I am you can match the piece that will peek out from behind and then trim it to 2 1/8″. And, trim the piece that was to the left of it to 1 5/8″. Attach all three pieces to the card base using liquid glue.

Step 5: Begin assembling your train by starting with the locomotive. Layer the brown base with white frosting details, then add colored accents for windows, wheels, and decorative elements.

Step 6: Assemble 2-3 additional cars using different colored cardstocks, varying the “cargo” in each car with different die-cut elements from the set.

Step 7: Using a t-square or a rular, arrange your complete train across the card front, with one of the cars on each of the folds. Mount each piece slightly away from the fold lines to help the card fold shut. Make sure the locomotive as far to the right as possible.

Step 8: Die-cut “Sweet Christmas using dies form the Gingerbread Planes die set in red glitter and brushed white cardstock. Layer them together slightly offset to make it look like they are blowing in the wind. Cut the banner hanger from mirror cardstock and attach to the the banner. Arrange the banner across the two smaller folds so that it attaches to the back of the locomotive and looks like it’s blowing horizontally. Mark where the score lines are and fold the banner tholder and cut the banner along the marks. Fasten the banner to the card using liquid glue.

Step 9: Add finishing touches with a white gel pen to create highlights on the frosting details on the train.
