DIY Card How To’s Using Scenes

Looking for DIY card inspirations? Read on to learn how to make a couple of very different cards using scenes.

I became inspired about using scenes in my cards while taking Altenew’s Season Scene Building class as part of their Educator Certification Program.

Lonely Lion DIY Card With Stamping and Ink Blending

I wish that you could see this card in person, it is so much prettier in real life. Maybe you’re just going to have to make it yourself to see what it’s really like.

To create the card I blend color onto watercolor paper beginning with the lightest yellows and then getting darker with the oranges. A little trick to improve the blending is to go back over where the colors meet with the lighter color after applying the darker color.

I then use the third-generation stamping technique to create the background. To do this I ink up the stamp and stamp it onto an extra piece of cardstock twice before stamping it on my card panel. This gives a nice faded look which helps to provide dimension to our scene.

I stamp the lion next making sure that his paws are grounded.

To give the card more perspective I finish the scene by stamping silhouettes of bushes and brush in front of the lion.

A couple of birds and the sentiment are all that’s left to stamp and then I just attach the card panel to the card base with glue runner and it’s done.

Sweet Shop Window DIY Card

Don’t these cupcakes look good enough to eat? They are easy to make by just stamping them onto white cardstock with black ink. To create the look of a storefront I stamp my wood pallet stamp in black onto white cardstock and then use a die to trim it to 3 3/4″ x 5″.

The next step is to create the frame with a scalloped circle die. First I center the die on the wood pallet card panel and run it through my die-cutting machine. I then cut three more circles from white cardstock and then glue all of the circles together. I do this to add dimension to the frame.

Now layout how I want the cupcakes to be arranged within the window first and then glue them to the card base. This is the tricky part because if you don’t pay attention to where the frame is your cupcakes could stick out on the other side. I then use a glue runner to attach the wood pallet to the card base and then add the frame over the top.

The last thing I do is to add a shop sign by stamping watermark ink onto a little scrap of black cardstock and then use a light blue glittery embossing powder for the sentiment. This gets added to the card using liquid glue.
