Welcome, fellow card makers! Today, we’re exploring the shimmer heat embossing technique to create two beautiful cards featuring the Peacock Butterfly Die set from Spellbinders.. This guide will walk you through the steps, supply lists, and tips to make your designs shimmer and shine.

How to Create the Perfect Shimmer with Hero Arts Iridescent Embossing Powders

Creating cards with a beautiful shimmer effect can elevate your designs to a new level. Hero Arts iridescent embossing powders are a fantastic way to add this touch of magic to your card-making projects. Follow these steps to achieve stunning results every time.

Step 1: Prepare Your Cardstock

Begin by selecting the cardstock you want to use for your card.

The iridescent embossing powders work on any cardstock, but are especially dynamic on black.

Prepare the surface by applying a watermark ink generously. The more ink you apply, the better the coverage you’ll achieve with the embossing powder.

Use a clean and smooth piece of cardstock to ensure the best results.

Step 2: Apply the Embossing Powder

Hold your prepared cardstock over a piece of scrap paper to catch any excess powder.

Sprinkle a generous amount of Hero Arts iridescent embossing powder over the inked area.

Allow the powder to sit on the ink for a minute or two to adhere properly.

Once the powder has had time to settle, gently pour the excess powder back into the container. Give your cardstock a light tap to remove any remaining loose powder.

Step 3: Heat the Powder

Turn on your heat tool and allow it to warm up for at least forty seconds before you begin.

Position the heat tool about an inch away from the powder and move it continuously to avoid overheating one spot.

Slowly heat the powder until it transforms into a smooth, melted finish. Be patient and keep the tool moving to achieve an even shimmer effect.

Safety Tip: Be cautious when using the heat tool, as it can become very hot.

Final Touches

Allow your embossed cardstock to cool completely before handling it further. Once cooled, admire the beautiful shimmer effect created by the Hero Arts iridescent embossing powder.

Project 1: Shimmer and Lace Birthday Card

Shimmer and Lace Birthday card made with Spellbinders Peacock Butterfly die set.

The goal for this card is to depict our beautiful shimmery butterfly in flight.  To do so, we set her at an angle atop a lacy white pearlescent, transluscent background.

How to Make the Shimmer and Lace Birthday Card

Prepare Your Card Base:

Create the Lace Background:

  • Trim another piece of heavy-weight vellum to 5″ x 7″.
  • Place it inside the Peacock Motif 3D embossing folder and run it through your die-cutting and embossing machine.
  • Trim the background panel to 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.
  • Fasten the panel centered on the card basing using a white liner sheet trimmed to 4 3/8″ x 6 3/8″.

Create Your Shimmer Panels

  • Trim three pieces of black cardstock to A2 size, 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.
  • Follow the steps listed above to create shimmery lavender, purple, and blue panels.

Die-cut the Details as follows:

  • Big main butterfly – lagoon
  • Big main butterfly + big butterfly details – onyx
  • Large ovals – shimmery purple
  • Small ovals and butterfly body- shimmery lavender
  • Outline ovals and butterfly body – shimmery blue

Assemble the Butterfly:

Use liquid glue and reverse tweezers to assemble the butterfly beginning with the bottom layer as follows:

  • Big main butterfly – lagoon
  • Big main butterfly + big butterfly details – onyx
  • Large ovals – shimmery purple
  • Small ovals and butterfly body- shimmery lavender
  • Outline ovals and butterfly body – shimmery blue
  • gems for eyes

Prepare the Sentiment

Heat emboss your “Happy Birthday” clear stamp sentiment onto a scrap of white cardstock with seedless preserves embossing glaze to make it stand out. Once the heat embossing has cooled, die-cut the sentiment with the coordinating die.

Assemble the Card

Attach the butterfly to the card base on an angle with liquid glue. And finally, pop up the sentiment using foam squares for added dimension.

Project 2: Shimmer and Glitter Butterfly Card

Exquisite Shimmer and Glitter card featuring peacock Buttterfly die.

Sometimes it’s a shame that cameras do such a gook job at reducing glare.  I wish you could see how pretty this card is with its glitter backdrop detailed in brushed gold. Spellbinders white glitter paper has rainbow colors which is heard to see in the photos.  Here’s another look.

detail on the Glitter and shimmer card made using Spellbinders Peacock butterfly.

The process for making this card is extremely similar to the first one.  This card base is made using the large big buttefly die.

To create a card base for a shape card.  Begin cutting and scoring a card base that is large enough to take the shape.  Die-cut the shape through both the front and the back of the card.

Make sure your die hangs slightly over the scored edge.

White glitter paper makes a beautiful base for the butterfly and brushed gold for the detail is really pretty.
