How To Make Four Cards With A Twist

Four cards displayed on a wooden surface, each featuring different designs and messages: "You Make Me Happy," "Sending Hugs & Happy Thoughts," and "Make Today So Amazing Yesterday Gets Jealous." Add a creative twist to your greetings with these vibrant designs.

Getting bored with your cards are looking the same way? Read on to learn how to create beautiful, unique one-of-a-kind cards with a twist.

The cards in this article were inspired by Altenew’s With A Twist Cardmaking Course.

Embossing With Layering Stamps

This first style is so gorgeous! The twist on this card is to use a layered stamp set but emboss the outline layer instead of stamping it with ink. And, the cards are quick and easy to make, here’s how:

The technique works best with layered stamp sets that include an outline stamp. And we’re going to heat emboss the outline first. Let’s begin by brushing a bit of anti-static powder over our card panel. Then we’ll use watermark ink to stamp our image onto an A2 size piece of colored cardstock.

Next, we want to sprinkle embossing powder over what we just stamped. Then we’ll warm up our heat tool by running it for 15-20 seconds before pointing it at our image. We’ll move the heat tool slowly back and forth over the image until it is smooth and melted.

Now we’ll stamp the next layer using ink that is the same color as the cardstock but has a different tone. To finish the card panel we’ll flick some diluted gold metallic watercolor paint over the top and set it aside to dry. When dry, we’ll use a glue runner to attach the card panel to the card base.

We’ll use a large “happy” die to cut the sentiment from mirrored cardstock. Then we’ll use the same die to cut from craft foam as well. Next, we just glue the foam to the backside of the mirrored cardstock. And then we’ll adhere the sentiment to the stock. We’ll use liquid glue for both steps. Lastly, we’ll heat emboss the strip sentiment with gold embossing powder. To pop it up to give it some dimension, we’ll use foam tape.

Both cards are made exactly the same. The only difference is the colors that were used for cardstock, ink, and embossing powder.

Color Combinations With A Twist

Using unique color combinations can be scary, but oh boy can they step up your game! Look how the bright chartreuse card panel makes our flowers pop.

This is another fairly easy card. We start by stamping the outline stamp layers of Altenew’s Garden Hydrangea stamp set onto teal cardstock for the flowers and purple for the leaves. Then we use colored pencils to add dimension. Using three to four tones in a color we begin with the darkest tone in the center of the buds. Then we use the next lighter color and blend it into the darker color. And we continue getting lighter and finish with the lightest at the tips of the blossoms.

The leaves are done using the same technique. Then we can cut out the flowers and leaves by using the dies or fussy cutting them.

Once the coloring is done finishing the card is quick. We adhere the card panel to an A2 white card base and then arrange the flowers and leaves the way we want them to be.

Then we take a piece of Press ‘N Seal and lay it over the top of the flowers and leaves. Next, we press lightly over the flowers to ensure that they are stuck to the Press ‘N Seal. Now we can lift our flowers and leaves up, turn them over, and add glue. And then we can turn them back over and glue them to the card panel.

All that is left is to stamp the sentiment onto the card panel using black dye ink.

Cut and Shape With A Twist

A unique cut and or shape can make the difference between a striking card and just one more like all the rest.

For this card, we’re going to end up with a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ square top fold card. So we’ll trim a piece of cardstock to 4 3/4″ x 9 1/2″ and score it down the middle lengthwise. Then we’ll use two colors of ink to stamp the outline leaf from Altenew’s Amazing You Stamp set onto the front of the card base.

Once the stamping is done we’ll cut the bottom right corner off of the card front to add some interest. We’ll make the cut beginning with where the card base is scored and end ending about a third of the way up.

Next, we can choose colored cardstock or in this case, we blend a coordinating color onto a piece of white cardstock to get just the right color. And then we use Altenew’s layered stamp set to create three beautiful butterflies. First, we stamp the outline layer in black ink and we stamp the second layer using a darker color ink than we used to blend the card with.

To cut the butterflies out we can use the coordinating dies or we can fussy cut them. And then we’ll use liquid glue to attach the butterflies and some sequins. Another twist we can use is to attach one of the butterflies to the piece of card from the inside that shows.

Lastly, we’ll heat emboss the sentiment onto a scrap of white cardstock using gold embossing powder. Then we can pop up the sentiment using foam tape to attach it to the card. And we’ll hang it off the edge or our angle cut to catch the eye.
