Scallops Labels & Tags

The Sealed 3D Botanical Collection, Scallops Labels & Tags is a set of 11 nesting cutting dies. The square-inspired design with its distinctive top of three soft curved scallops is a perfect match for the Mushrooms from me to you embossed designs.  You can pair the two together to create depth and dimension to your cards.

These dies can be used to anchor your design, create frames by nesting two, or make shaped cards.  There are so many versatile design options. And, the smallest shape is a tag to accent a project or gift.  Or, use it to back the tag you create with Mushrooms From Me To You.

Creating Cards with the Sealed 3D Botanical Collection

Here are step-by-step instructions for two card designs, one featuring the “Mushrooms From Me To You” and the other using the “Floral For You” embossing folder.  If you are new to 3D embossing, there are tips at the bottom of this article to create stunning cards with them.

A beautiful birthday card and matching tag with mushrooms on them created with a 3D embossing folder with a twist.

The beauty to this emboss & cut folder is that you can make three items at once.

  1. Trim Your Paper: Trim Spellbinders portabello to a half sheet (5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″)..
  2. Prepare Your Folder: Lightly mist your cardstock with water and place it in the “Mushrooms From Me To You” embossing folder.
  3. Run Through Die-Cutting Machine: Slowly run the folder through your die-cutting machine.
  4. Enhance the Embossing: Use Yasutomo metallic watercolor paints to highlight the embossed mushroom designs.
  5. Finish Your Card: Attach the embossed design to a card base, and add a sentiment.

TIPS

  • If you’re using a Platinum 6 you will use the following sandwich (beginning on the bottom):  Platform Base (A), 3D Embossing folder with cardstock inside, Adapter Plate (D).
  • You can use a metallic marker to draw the eye to the sentiment on the tag.
  • Use metallic spray on your background layers for a dramatic magical effect.

The process uses the same techniques as you use for the Mushrooms For You Projects.  but, for these projects, we use pink sand cardstock.  And, we highlight the embossing with colored pencils.

Practical Tips for Using 3D Embossing Folders With A Twist

Now that you’re familiar with some of the standout products in the Sealed 3D Botanical Collection, here are some practical tips for using 3D embossing folders in your projects.

Choosing the Right Paper

The type of paper you use can significantly impact the final result. Heavier cardstock works best for 3D embossing, as it holds the intricate details better. Experiment with different paper types to see which one gives you the desired effect.

Spellbinders cardstock is perfect for embossing.

Preparing Your Folder

Before you start embossing, make sure to lightly mist your paper with water. This helps soften the fibers and allows for a more detailed emboss. Be careful not to over-saturate the paper, as this can cause it to tear.

Embossing Techniques

For the best results, run your 3D embossing folder through a die-cutting machine slowly. This ensures that the pressure is evenly distributed, resulting in a crisp, clean emboss. If your machine has adjustable settings, experiment to find the best one for your folder and paper combination.

My favorite die-cutting and embossing machine to use for 3D embossing is Spellbinders Platinum 6 with the universal plates.  Their sandwich for this kind of embossing produces perfect results.  And, if you have trouble remembering what’s in the sandwich like I do you can refer to the the base plate.  It has their sandwiches printed right on the plate.

Re-emboss Technique For 3D Embossing Folders With A Twist

The embossing on your projects will flatten out when you die-cut.  You can add the dimension back to them by placing them back in the embossing folder.  You want to have the side that the design dips into the folder down on your worksurface.  Carefully position your project into the folder inside the design.  Softly run your finger over the project to “re-emboss” it.

Conclusion

3D embossing folders with a twist offer endless possibilities for creating stunning, dimensional designs.
